REFLECTIVE ESSAY

A Look Back at PS 1010

...........In my honors PS 1010 class, I learned about the various agents, structures, and institutions that shape our society as we know it. After breaking down how power is distributed in our society, I was surprised at how “possible” it was to create change. Nearly every decision made towards creating policies is done by either one person or a small group of people. The most difficult part about creating change is getting in contact with the person or group that has power. However, once you are able to talk to them, you can truly make a difference and change whatever you want. In relation to our group’s topic, rising medication costs, we needed to fix this problem at the level of the federal government since medication costs are something that affects everybody.

Since I am pursuing pharmacy as my career path, I plan to continue working to solve this problem. When I enter pharmacy school, I want to join the Michigan Pharmacists Association since they are an established and well-recognized organization that advocates elected officials on why certain pieces of legislation will have a positive or negative impact on pharmacy. Making medication affordable to the masses is the most crucial step to ensuring that pharmacists can provide safe and effective patient care. The issue of rising medication costs is one that I will definitely be dedicated to fighting since it is has such a big impact on my future career as a pharmacist.

Working as part of a group had its fair share of ups and downs. The biggest benefit to working in a group is being able to delegate tasks. With more people working on the same project, we were able to accomplish much more. Also, having five minds working together creates better ideas than having one individual work on a project. But, working as a group definitely has its own set of problems. The most apparent problem when working on this project was finding time when everybody was available. Having five college students with separate classes and work times definitely caused a ton of scheduling issues.

Although completing this project was not an easy task, it is definitely an experience I am glad I had. Working as part of a team has definitely improved upon my cooperation skills which are crucial in any work-place or school related task. Being able to work with others towards a common goal ultimately determines your success in a field. Currently, I work as a pharmacy technician and when there are 20 prescriptions that need to be processed for patients that are waiting, my team and I need to work together to get all the patients situated as quickly as possible.

Overall, I have really enjoyed my time and growth in the Honors PS 1010 classroom. I would also like to give a special shoutout to my professor Dr. Sprague for a truly wonderful semester. I have learned so much in such a small amount of time and it is all thanks to the way that you ran your classroom. This class has really helped me learn about power distribution in our society and improve upon my ability to work as part of a team.
