      REFLECTIVE ESSAY

A Look Back at Honors 1000

As a student at Wayne State University, my ultimate goal is to graduate from the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with a Pharm.D. I have a very strong passion and ardor for sciences. Growing up, I have always found happiness in helping others and brightening up their day. Given my chosen career choice in pharmacy, I applied and was accepted into the HealthPro Start program available at Wayne State. The program guarantees me a spot in the EACPHS, allowing me to focus on my studies and broaden my knowledge about pharmacy.

In order to gain experience in the field of pharmacy I currently work as a pharmacy technician at Melvindale Pharmacy and volunteer as a pharmacy technician at Oakwood-Beaumont Hospital. My time at both of these locations has allowed me to gain experience in my desired field and jump-start my education about pharmacy.

However, even a hard science such as pharmacy can benefit from an understanding of art and analysis. I believe that the Honors 1000 course provides a different “way-of-seeing” Detroit, broadening my perspective on much more than a city. I was challenged to think critically about situations, rather than looking for a single-world answer to the problems that the city faces today. I’m a natural born citric and the field of social sciences (which the class delves into) definitely peaks my interest.

In terms of writing techniques, the class has helped me discuss my arguments in a unique, but logical fashion. Focusing on case-study scenarios is a great way to build credibility in an essay, however creating an idea built off of a case study is what distinguishes an average writer to an eloquent writer. The first essay “Who are we?” asked a question that is commonly thrown to the side. Most people never truly stop and reflect upon the decisions they make. This essay gave me the opportunity to create a fictional character that enters Detroit who tries to find his road to success in the motor city. After finishing the essay, it has allowed me to truly understand my personal story, understand where I came from and what I wanted from myself.

This leads me to my next essay, “Where are we going?” which discusses the impact of the history of Detroit and the future direction of the city. Building off the previous essay, knowing who we are allows us to determine what we want our final destination to be. In this essay, I discussed the impact that Ford Motor Company had on the city of Detroit. The owner of the company, Henry Ford, wanted the city to head in an industrialized, racially-equal, and family-oriented direction.

In conclusion, the Honors 1000 course is not about memorizing facts or learning about laws created by scientists from hundreds of years ago. Rather, it is a critical thinking class that has assisted me to further my arguments by choosing specific examples and analyzing the impact of said examples. I believe this course will help me solve any problem that would occur in my future career of pharmacy and become more empathetic towards my patients. The best way to understand somebody is to look at everything from their perspective and the Honors 1000 course has truly helped me to develop rationalization skills to put myself in my future patient’s shoes.
